Help is Available
If you should encounter any difficulties please post
a message and tell us where you got stuck. Also, you can post
a message if everything went smooth, please. Please include a detailed
description with your operating system version and any other details
that you can get hold of.
Also, there is a "Diagnosing
Errors" page available that covers frequent cases.
Download the Installer
Please go to the Sourceforge
File Release page and download the current version:
Also, you will find documentation and other material on this page.
Install The OpenACS Platform
Run the "ProjectOpen-3.1.x.x.Wininstaller.exe". The installer
will ask you for several options in the following screen. Just leave
all fields with the default values to get a running system.
Main Configuration Section
Here is the detailed meaning of the fileds anyway:
- Site Name: "]project-open[ Test Server"
Will appear at the top of the login screen. You can change the
name later.
- Web Server Port: "80"
Please make sure that there is no other web server running such
as as Apache or Microsoft IIS. Optionally, you can choose a different
port for ]project-open[
such as "8080". However, you will have to specify this
port in your Web browser URL later: such as: "http://localhost:8080/".
- SMTP Server: "localhost"
You can leave the "localhost" default value in this
field even if there is no SMTP server. It's OK for just trying
the system. As an alternative, please specify a valid SMTP server.
For example, you can check in your Outlook "Tools" /
"Accounts" menu, select your default email account and
select the "Servers" tab. There you will probably find
a valid "Outgoing mail (SMTP)" value. However, it's
not going to work if you need a password for your SMTP server.
In this case you will need to install an SMTP server on your local
machine. Such an SMTP server comes with Windows 2000 Server (Control
Panel / Add & Remove Programs / Add & Remove Windows Components
/ Internet Information Server / Details / SMTP Service). Also
there are free SMTP servers on the Internet such as Xmailserver.org)
- Database IP-Address: "127.0.0.1"
Tell ]project-open[
to use the local PostgreSQL database. However, you can also change
this IP to use an already existing PostgreSQL installation ("Native"
PostgreSQL database, experts only).
- Database Name: "projop"
Please leave the default.
- Database Username: "projop"
Please leave the default.
- Database Password: "secret"
Please leave the default
- Destination Location: "C:\ProjectOpen"
You can change the name, but the name must not include spaces.
Select Components
The screenshot below shows the default selection screen.

Please choose the product you want to install (see description
in "Included Software" above).
After the installation please start your favourite Web Browser
(IE, Opera, FireFox, ...) and enter the URL: "http://localhost:80/".
You should see the very first OpenACS screen. Congratulations! This
was the hard part.
After the Installation
Please restart your computer after the installation.
Starting and Stopping ]project-open[
]project-open[
is a server application or "service". I does not have
a Windows GUI as many other Windows applications. However, we have
provided you with several tools to control this server:
- Starting ]project-open[:
Please go to Start -> Programs -> ProjectOpen -> Start
ProjectOpen Server. This program will start all necessary system
components
- Stopping ]project-open[:
Please go to Start -> Programs -> ProjectOpen -> Stop
ProjectOpen Server.
In particular, you will have to restart ]project-open[
after the installation of new modules.
Modifying ]project-open[
Service Properties
For more advanced configuration options please go to the "Services"
administration:
- Further configuration:
Please go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative
Tools -> Services and look for service names starting with
"ProjectOpen"
Here you can set all relevant properties of these services:
- Individual Start & Stop:
You can start an stop the ]project-open[
services (CygServer, PostgreSQL database and AOLServer) individually
via the respective buttons at the top of the window.
- Set Restart Properties:
You may want to set AOLServer so that it restarts automatically
after the installation of a new module etc. Please double-clik
"ProjectOpen AOLServer-projop" and go to the "Recovery"
tab and set the "failure response" to restart after
1 minute (see below).

If You Encontered an Issue:
Please check the "Diagnosing
Errors" page. This will guide you step-by-step to localize
a potential issue.
Where to go From Here
The first thing you should do right now is to post
a message in the ]project-open[discussion
forum saying that you installed the system successfully (or specify
the issues that you had). This is your ticket for future support
... :-)
Then:
