Installation Overview

There are several different ways to install ]project-open[, with specific advantages and disadvantages. Below is a list of three main options, in order of rising technical difficulty.

Demo Server / SaaS

To evaluate the functionality of ]project-open[ you can use our demo servers:

The disadvantage of the demo servers is that you can not login as an Administrator for security reasons.

Services Offered

As an alternative to a local install please consider our SaaS (Software as a Service) offering. For as low as EUR 49,-/month we can provide you a hassle-free server with full ]po[ Admin access.

VMware Installer

A VMware virtual machine image is our preferred installation method and suitable for most users. The VMware image contains a CentOS 5.1 Linux installation with the right versions of all necessary software components, ready to be deployed for production use (the ]po[ team uses this image as the base for most commercial installations). In case you have never used VM technology before please follow this step-by-step guide.

The VMware installation method is available for Windows, Linux and Apple user. Once downloaded, the installation itself takes less then 5 minutes.

Please proceed as follows.

  1. Download "project-open-VMware-3.3.2-1.zip" from SourceForge. The 1.4 GB file contains a zipped VMware virtual machine image.
  2. Please download and install either "VMware Server 1.x " or "VMware Player" from VMware. Both applications are free.
  3. Follow the instructions from the README. See an overview of all steps involved here.
  4. Login to the VMware as user "root" with password "root".

The performance of a VMware installation is suitable for production use in organizations with up to 10 "active" users (regularly using the system).

That's all for the VMware installation. Please see our user manuals for details. For questions, suggestions, etc. please visit our Open Discussions forum at SourceForge (after you have read the manuals, please!).

"Native" Installations

A native installation of ]project-open[ is relatively complex because of its integration with many software packages and the dependency on specific versions. Therefore we recommend this step only for advanced Linux system administrators. Please try with a VMware first and go through this hassle only if you really have to.

Please check our native installation page for a list of the most common pitfalls during installation.
