Virtualization technology for beginners

Tutorial: Installing ]project-open[ Using VMware

For Absolute Beginners

People with different technical backgrounds use and evaluate ]project-open[. This small tutorial assumes that you are not the typical computer nerd and therefore not necessarily familiar with VMware and other virtualization technology.

Downloading an "Entire Computer"

All you have to understand that using this technology your computer serves simply as a host to run another (virtual) computer that is represented by a couple of files. So when you download the VM image you are actually downloading an entire computer as a piece of software. When download is finished, unzip the file to a local folder. Please make sure that you have sufficient disk space available. The VM might require up to 5 GB. If some files don't get unzipped you won't be able to start the VM.

Running the Virtual Computer

In order to run this virtual computer, you need another piece of software. We recommend for beginners the freely available VM Player from VM Ware, that you can download after a registration that shouldn't take more than a minute. So just download, install and start your VM Player.

As a next step please load the ]po[ Virtual Machine by navigating to the *.vmx file. Give the VM player a few minutes time so that your new computer can start up. In case it takes too much time and you have enough memory available, update the memory allocation for this VM.
In VM Player you do this by choosing from the top menu bar Troubleshoot/Change Memory Allocation. Default is 284MB or so, go ahead and give it 512 MB in case your PC has more 1 GB RAM or more.

First thing you'll see after the system messages and the hour glass is gone, is a login screen. Please login with the user name root and the password root. After some more HD activity you will see a windows desktop, paved with dozens of shortcuts. The one labeled "]po[ homepage" opens a Firefox browser and if everything went well you will see a first screen of a wizard that helps you setting up the application.

Note: In case you get a "503 Service unavailable" page please wait 1-2 minutes. You server is still starting up.

Depending on the VM product you are using, only a part of the screen can be seen. Simply go to your regular browser and type the URI that is shown on the left side of your login screen (e.g. http://172.168.2.34) , voilà, you get ]po[ in your local browser.

Welcome to ]project-open[!

As above mentioned, ]project-open[ is quite a versatile and powerful software. It's not only used by Web workers and small agencies but also in large organizations with more than 2000 users. In order to pre-configure the application, a wizard had been added to latest version 3.2. Simply follow the steps and set up your server conveniently.

Note:
In case you decide to explore the application a bit more, you might want to copy the demo data to play around with. You can delete your demo data any time later using functionality provided in the Admin section.
